Virtus Training - 2014 KC Volunteer Requirement - Vince DeBonis

Previous Next [Print]

Brothers (and family), I wanted to convey a comprehensive message about the status of Virtus training. Please read this carefully as this should provide all the information needed to understand why and how to complete the training process. On behalf of GK Terren Roark, please do your part to comply and become a duly-trained volunteer for KC 9759.

We have been communicating that in order to serve as a volunteer in any activity that could create an interface with children, anywhere in the Catholic diocesan communities, requires attending Virtus training. Here is an excerpt of a message from the ArchDiocese:

Isabel Guerra, the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Director.

“I would like to clarify the Volunteer Compliance report form is for all ministries, organizations, or groups that volunteer with children and youth on parish or school grounds.  Some organizations may not volunteer directly with children but may come in contact with children and youth in some of their activities. For example, some Knights of Columbus may have pancake breakfast, fish fry, host sports events, Halloween party, parish festivals where kids are present and they will come in contact with them. Those individuals are required to follow Safe Environment Guidelines.”

This applies to KCs and any adult family members. We are happy to announce that there is a base course, “Protecting God’s Children”, organized for Epiphany parish, on Sept. 13, Saturday. The course is from 1 -4 p.m. in the Parish Activity Center. Please arrive well before the start time and bring a valid driver's license. If you arrive late, we will need to ask you to attend another session.

The Epiphany class is limited to 45, and some slots are already taken. So please sign up asap, or find another in the many other locations and dates found on the web-site.

Virtus on-line sign-up procedure

·         Go to

·         Click “Registration” then “Begin the registration process”

·         Select “Galveston-Houston ArchDiocese”

·         Create user ID and Password (instructions are given)

·         Complete personal info, as it is written on your valid driver's license (provide maiden name…if spouse signing up)

·         Select Primary Volunteer location (Epiphany for most) and your “title”. Most should just type “KC volunteer”, and check “KC” on the next ministry list.

·         Agree to Safe Conduct policies

·         Agree to Background check

·         Answer “Attended Virtus Protecting God’s Children”, 3 hour course (select “Yes” only if you are sure you have attended within the past 5 years. I have attached a file that has the parish records for Virtus training and/or replies from members on their attendance status.)

·         Select a session to attend “Protecting God’s Children”, 3 hour course from the list. The only session (3-hr base course) at Epiphany is Sept. 13, Saturday. Note that the courses throughout the Houston area are listed in chronological order…there are a large number of each type, the Epiphany course is about 20-30 down the list. Select the “radio button” (for Epiphany or the refresher, Keeping the Promise Alive- necessary in five years.)

·         Close browser.

We are looking forward to seeing you attend the Epiphany course, or getting your Virtus training completed so we can staff our volunteer activities this fraternal year. There should be more training courses at Epiphany, but there is only a short grace period for volunteers to have been trained, so we must try to “strike while the iron is hot.”
